The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner :: Sound fury william Faulkner Essays
The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner William Faulknerââ¬â¢s The Sound and the Fury is a novel that depicts the loss of traditional Southern values after the Civil War. This corruption is shown through the Compson family, whose notions of family honor and obsession with their family name are the driving force in severing all the ties that once held them together. Mr. Compson tries to instill these notions into his four children, but each is so occupied by their own beliefs and obsessions that this effort results in a house that is completely devoid of love and consumed by self-absorption. Caddy is perhaps the most prominent figure in the novel. The three Compson boys obsess over her, looking to her as a mother figure and source of love and understanding but ironically, it is Caddy that serves as the familyââ¬â¢s downfall. Engaging in sex and getting pregnant, Caddy not only shames her family but also tramples all the ideals of the old South, as does her daughter after her. Quentin relies on his knowledge of Souther n codes to provide order, yet Jason cares only for himself and his personal gain. These traits are pivotal in explaining Faulknerââ¬â¢s purpose, using one familyââ¬â¢s corruption as a symbol of the downfall of the old South. Time is also an important concept in Faulknerââ¬â¢s novel. Timeââ¬â¢s influence on human interaction and thought is depicted through the three Compson boys. Benjy, who is mentally retarded and has no concept of time, uses his disability to escape the Compsonsââ¬â¢ obsession with their name and honor. Quentin meanwhile is obsessed with the past and is trapped in these thoughts, eventually committing suicide to escape the ticking of time. Jason concentrates only on the present and future, believing that time can never be wasted and letting greed consume him. Timeââ¬â¢s influence on the family also helps to showcase the novelââ¬â¢s purpose as it slowly eats away at the family and further contributes to its corruption. Though The Sound and the Fury is about the downfall of the old South, Faulkner uses the Compsonsââ¬â¢ servant Dilsey as a symbol of hope for the future.

Jean-Paul Sartre Essay -- Biography Biographies Philosophers Essays
Jean-Paul Sartre Jean-Paul Sartre was an existentialist philosopher. The questions of his philosophy often come out in his readings. Existentialism questions why we exist. Existentialists deny the existence of God. Existentialist writers such as Kafka and Sartre often use prisons and solitary confinement to tell their stories. Often, neither the reader nor the protagonist is aware of what crime has been committed. Jean-Paul Sartreââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Wallâ⬠reflects his philosophy and personal experiences. He worked for the French resistance and was imprisoned by the Germans during WWII. The story takes place during the Spanish Civil War in an old hospital being used by the Spanish Fascistââ¬â¢s to house prisoners. ââ¬Å"The Wallâ⬠is told from a first person, stream of consciousness point-of-view, and uses existentialist philosophy, to illuminate the follies of totalitarian governments like Fascism, and Nazism. Like most existentialist writers, Sartre chooses to tell the story of ââ¬Å"The Wallâ⬠form the first person stream-of-consciousness point-of-view. We get dialogue from other characters, but the dialogue is filtered through the mind and thoughts of Pablo. The terror in the story slowly unfolds from Pabloââ¬â¢s mind. In the beginning, Sartre only gives us a hint of terror. The reality of the situation has not yet set into Pabloââ¬â¢s mind: They pushed us into a big white room and I began to blink because the light hurt my eyes. Then I saw a table and four men behind the table, civilians, looking over the papers. They had bunched another group of prisoners in the back and we had to cross the whole room to join them. There were several I knew and some others who must have been foreigners. The two in front of me were blond with round skulls; they looked alike. I supposed they were French. The smaller one kept hitching up his pants; nerves. (7) The emphasis on the ââ¬Å"round skullâ⬠foreshadows a scene that later brings terror into greater effect. Tom tells Pablo while they are waiting to be executed, that they aim for the eyes and head to disfigure your face. The emphasis on the perfect round skulls in the first paragraph draws attention to faces and heads. ââ¬Å"The smaller one hitching up his nerves,â⬠tell us from the beginning that Pablo should be nervous himself. Pablo knows he is in trouble at the beginning. He just does not realize the amount yet. ... ...out truth or a personââ¬â¢s innocence. Juan is guilty of know crime and is put to death. Garcia who Pablo meets in the courtyard after he gives his false testimony, ââ¬Å"had nothing to do with politicsâ⬠(36). When asked why he was arrested, Garica responds ââ¬Å"They arrest everybody who doesnââ¬â¢t think the way they doâ⬠(36). The Naziââ¬â¢s and the Fascistââ¬â¢s used mental torture and the threat of terror to get people to question their own existence, their own sanity. They do not think, they just take orders and obey. Therefore, it is perfectly ironic that Pablo sends them to a place devoid of reason or thought. The further irony is that Gris is hiding in the graveyard in the gravediggersââ¬â¢ shack and is killed in a gunfight. Pablo says after learning of Grisââ¬â¢s death, ââ¬Å"everything began to spin and I found myself siting on the ground: I laughed so hard I criedâ⬠(37). Pablo laughs until he cries because he realizes he never will understand why one man dies and another lives. In spite of all his thinking and mental anguish over the question, every answer he discovers leads back to Descartes; the only part of his existence he can not question is the one truth, ââ¬Å"I think, therefore I am."

Illustration Paragraph Essay
So, letââ¬â¢s suppose that you have done some brainstorming to develop your thesis. What else should you keep in mind as you begin to create paragraphs? Every paragraph in a paper should be Unifiedââ¬âAll of the sentences in a single paragraph should be related to a single controlling idea (often expressed in the topic sentence of the paragraph). Clearly related to the thesisââ¬âThe sentences should all refer to the central idea, or thesis, of the paper (Rosen and Behrens 119). Coherentââ¬âThe sentences should be arranged in a logical manner and should follow a definite plan for development (Rosen and Behrens 119). Well-developedââ¬âEvery idea discussed in the paragraph should be adequately explained and supported through evidence and details that work together to explain the paragraphââ¬â¢s controlling idea (Rosen and Behrens 119). top Read more:à How many sentences in a paragraph for college. How do I organize a paragraph? There are many different ways to organize a paragraph. The organization you choose will depend on the controlling idea of the paragraph. Below are a few possibilities for organization, with brief examples. Narration: Tell a story. Go chronologically, from start to finish. (See an example.) Description: Provide specific details about what something looks, smells, tastes, sounds, or feels like. Organize spatially, in order of appearance, or by topic. (See an example.) Process: Explain how something works, step by step. Perhaps follow a sequenceââ¬âfirst, second, third. (See an example.) Classification: Separate into groups or explain the various parts of a topic. (See an example.) Illustration: Give examples and explain how those examples prove your point. (See the detailed example in the next section of this handout.) 5-step process to paragraph development Letââ¬â¢s walk through a 5-step process to building a paragraph. Each step of the process will include an explanation of the step and a bit of ââ¬Å"modelâ⬠text to illustrate how the step works. Our finished model paragraph will be about slave spirituals, the original songs that African Americans created during slavery. The model paragraph uses illustration (giving examples) to prove its point. Step 1. Decide on a controlling idea and create a topic sentence Paragraph development begins with the formulation of the controlling idea. This idea directs the paragraphââ¬â¢s development. Often, the controlling idea of a paragraph will appear in the form of a topic sentence. In some cases, you may need more than one sentence to express a paragraphââ¬â¢s controlling idea. Here is the controlling idea for our ââ¬Å"model paragraph,â⬠expressed in a topic sentence: Model controlling idea and topic sentenceââ¬â Slave spirituals often had hidden double meanings. Step 2. Explain the controlling idea Paragraph development continues with an expression of the rationale or the explanation that the writer gives for how the reader should interpret the information presented in the idea statement or topic sentence of the paragraph. The writer explains his/her thinking about the main topic, idea, or focus of the paragraph. Hereââ¬â¢s the sentence that would follow the controlling idea about slave spirituals: Model explanationââ¬âOn one level, spirituals referenced heaven, Jesus, and the soul; but on another level, the songs spoke about slave resistance. Step 3. Give an example (or multiple examples) Paragraph development progresses with the expression of some type of support or evidence for the idea and the explanation that came before it. The example serves as a sign or representation of the relationship established in the idea and explanation portions of the paragraph. Here are two examples that we could use to illustrate the double meanings in slave spirituals: Model example Aââ¬â For example, according to Frederick Douglass, the song ââ¬Å"O Canaan, Sweet Canaanâ⬠spoke of slavesââ¬â¢ longing for heaven, but it also expressed their desire to escape to the North. Careful listeners heard thisà second meaning in the following lyrics: ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t expect to stay / Much longer here. / Run to Jesus, shun the danger. / I donââ¬â¢t expect to stay.â⬠Model example Bââ¬â Slaves even used songs like ââ¬Å"Steal Away to Jesus (at midnight)â⬠to announce to other slaves the time and place of secret, forbidden meetings. Step 4. Explain the example(s) The next movement in paragraph development is an explanation of each example and its relevance to the topic sentence and rationale that were stated at the beginning of the paragraph. This explanation shows readers why you chose to use this/or these particular examples as evidence to support the major claim, or focus, in your paragraph. Continue the pattern of giving examples and explaining them until all points/examples that the writer deems necessary have been made and explained. NONE of your examples should be left unexplained. You might be able to explain the relationship between the example and the topic sentence in the same sentence which introduced the example. More often, however, you will need to explain that relationship in a separate sentence. Look at these explanations for the two examples in the slave spirituals paragraph: Model explanation for example Aââ¬â When slaves sang this song, they could have been speaking of their departure from this life and their arrival in heaven; however, they also could have been describing their plans to leave the South and run, not to Jesus, but to the North. Model explanation for example Bââ¬â[The relationship between example B and the main idea of the paragraphââ¬â¢s controlling idea is clear enough without adding another sentence to explain it.] Step 5. Complete the paragraphââ¬â¢s idea or transition into the next paragraph The final movement in paragraph development involves tying up the loose endsà of the paragraph and reminding the reader of the relevance of the information in this paragraph to the main or controlling idea of the paper. At this point, you can remind your reader about the relevance of the information that you just discussed in the paragraph. You might feel more comfortable, however, simply transitioning your reader to the next development in the next paragraph. Hereââ¬â¢s an example of a sentence that completes the slave spirituals paragraph: Model sentence for completing a paragraphââ¬â What whites heard as merely spiritual songs, slaves discerned as detailed messages. The hidden meanings in spirituals allowed slaves to sing what they could not say. Notice that the example and explanation steps of this 5-step process (steps 3 and 4) can be repeated as needed. The idea is that you continue to use this pattern until you have completely developed the main idea of the paragraph. It is an urban metropolis with over 8 million inhabitants. It is predicted that over four million residents of the surrounding Jabodetabek area commute in and out of the city each working day. Transport issues have increasingly begun to attract political attention and it has been estimated that in 2020 without a major transportation breakthrough traffic jams will overwhelm the city. Since 1 980 more than twenty-five general and special subject studies have been conducted related to possible Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) systems in Jakarta. One of the major reasons for the delays in tackling the problem was the economic crisis of 1997-98. Before the crisis a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) scheme was considered as part of a new MRT calling for private sector involvement. After the crisis, the plan to rely on a BOT to provide financing proved infeasible and the MRT project was again proposed as a government-funded scheme. Current public transportation in Jakarta mainly consists of various types of buses, starting from the very small bemo and pickup sized mikrolet, to slightly larger minbuses and full sized city buses. There are also both two and four wheeled taxis. Current transport systems include widely used MetroMini and Kopaja cheap minibuses, and the TransJakarta bus rapid transit system, and the Jabodetabek Commuter Railway. [edit]Lines The rail-based Jakarta MRT is expected to stretch across over 108 kilometres, including 21. 7 km for the North-South Corridor (From Lebak Bulus to Kampung Bandan) and 87 km for East-West Corridor(From Balaraja to Cikarang). [2] [edit]North-South corridor The North-South corridor will be built in two phases. Phase I, will be constructed in advance connects Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI along 15. km including 13 stations (7 elevated stations and 6 underground stations). The Indonesian ministry of Transport approved this plan in September 2010 and invited tenders and will be built at April 2012. [3] Phase II, will extend the North-South line from Bundaran HI to Kampung Bandan (7 underground stations and 1 ground-level station), targeted to operate in 2018 (accelerated from 2020 as the original plan[4]). [5] After completion of MRT Phase I and II, together with TransJakarta will serve 60 percent total trips made by Jakartans. edit]Phase I The first phase is 15. 7 kilometres (9. 8 mi) long from Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI. The c onstruction project will begin in June 2011 and is expected to be completed in 2016 to serve 212,000 passengers per day. This expected capacity may be maxed out to 960,000 per day. [7] This loan is to be forwarded from the National Government to the Jakarta City Administration as a grant (on-granting agreement). 8] After the signing of the granting agreement for LA2, city administration will propose another two loan agreements for LA3 and LA4 to the central government. These proposals will become a lending agreement for the local government. The total amount of LA3 and LA4 addressed as a loan by the local government is about 71867 billion yen. This amount is based on the progress, outcome and absorbance of LA2. The total loan package from JICA for the development of the Jakarta MRT system is worth a total of 120 billion yen.Work on the basic design for the first phase of the current version of the project began in late 2010. The tender process was underway in late 2012 when the new governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo, unexpectedly said that he wanted a review of the project. After several months of uncertainty governor Joko Widodo announced that the project would go ahead. He listed it as one of the priority projects in the Jakarta city budget for 2013. Its establishment was approved by the provincial parliament (DPRD) on 10 June 2008 and final establishment was by notary act on 17 June 200 8. Its purpose is to operate the Jakarta MRT System. The shares are made up from 99% Jakarta Provincial Government and 1% PT Pasar Jaya (another Jakarta Reginal-Government-Owned-Company). PT MRTJ is classed as a Regional-Government-Owned-Company (Badan Usaha Milik Daerah-BUMD).The BUMD form for PT MRTJ is designed not to create profits for the shareholders, but instead to create flexibility in accessing alternative financing, which would otherwise be impossible if the company was directly part of the government. With this, the cost of tickets sold to clients will be reduced with some of the operational cost being subsidised by other sources. The BUMD form also ensures transparency and accountability through the shareholders' General Meeting, Decision Making and Reporting System which will be publicly available. Indian Parliament
PARLIAMENT IN INDIA AND SHORT NOTES ON OTHER PARLIAMENTS By, T. Vishnu, IX A. Theà Parliament of Indiaà is the supremeà legislative bodyà inà India. The parliament house originally known as ââ¬ËCouncil House ââ¬Ë, founded in 1919, the Parliament alone possessesà legislative supremacyà and thereby ultimate power over all political bodies in India. The Parliament of India comprises thePresident of Indiaà and the two Houses,à Lok Sabhaà (House of the People) andà Rajya Sabhaà (Council of States). The President has the power to summon and prorogue either House of Parliament or to dissolve Lok Sabha. The parliament isà bicameral, with anà upper houseà called as Council of States orà Rajya Sabha, and aà lower houseà called as House of People orà Lok Sabha. The two Houses meet in separateà chambersà , in New Delhi. The Members of either house are commonly referred to as Members of Parliament or MP. The MPs of Lok Sabha are elected byà direct electionà and the MPs of Rajya Sabha are elected by the members of the State Legislative Assemblies and Union territories of Delhi and Pondicherry only in accordance withà proportional voting. The Parliament is composed of 790 MPs, who serve the largestà democraticà electorateà in the world The Estimates Committee, constituted for the first time inà 1950, is a Parliamentary Committee consisting of 30à Members, elected every year by the Lok Sabha from amongst its Members. The Chairman of the Committee isà appointed by the Speaker from amongst its members. A Minister cannot be elected as a member of the Committee and if a member after his election to the Committee, is appointed a Minister, heà ceases to be a member of theà Committee from the date of such appointmentTerm of Office The term of office of the Committee is one year. Functions The functions of the Estimates Committee are: (a) to report what economies, improvements inà organisation, efficiency or admini strative reform, consistent with the policy underlying the estimatesà may be effected; (b) to suggest alternative policies in order to bring about efficiency and economy in administration; (c) to examine whether the money is well laid out within the limits of the policy implied in the estimates; and d) to suggest the form in which the estimates shall be presented to Parliament. The Committee does not exercise its functions in relation to such Public Undertakings as are allotted to the Committee on Public Undertakings by the Rules of Procedure of Lok Sabha or by the Speaker. Working Theà Parliament of Great Britainà was formed in 1707à Soon after it is constituted, the Committee selects such of the estimates pertaining to a Ministry/Department of theà Central Government or such of the statutory and other bodies of the Central Government as may seem fit to the Committee. The Committee also examines matters of special interest which may arise or come to light in the course of its work or which are specifically referred to it by the House or the Speaker. The Committee calls for preliminary material from the Ministry/Department, statutory and other Government bodies in regard to the subjects selected for examination and also memoranda from non-officials connected with the subjects for the use of the Members of the Committee. The Committee, from time to time, appoints one or more Sub-Committees/Study Groups for carrying out detailed examination of various subjects. If it appears to the Committee that it is necessary for the purpose of its examination that an on-the-spot study should be made, the Committee may, with the approval of the Speaker decide to undertake tours to make a study of anyà particular matter, project or establishment, either as a whole Committee or by dividing itself into Study Groups. Notes relating to the institutions/offices etc. to be visited are called for in advance from the concerned Ministries/Departments etc. and circulated to th e Members of the Committee/Sub- Committee/Study Group. The Members while on tour may also meet the representatives of chambers of commerce and other nonofficial trade organisations and bodies which are concerned with the subjects under examination of the Committee, for an informal discussion. When the Committee/Sub-Committee/Study Group is on study tour only informal sittings are held at the place of visit. At such sitting neither evidence is recorded nor any decisions are taken. All discussions held by the Committee with the representatives of theà Ministries/ Departments, nonofficial organisations, etc. re treated as confidential andà no one having access to the discussions directly orà indirectly, should communicate to the Press or anyunauthorised person any information about matters takenà up during the discussions. Later in the light of informal discussions during Study Tours,à memoranda received from non-officials and informationà collected from the Ministry/Depart ment concerned and other sources, non-official and official witnesses are invited to give evidence at formal sittings of theEstimates Committee held in Parliament House/Parliament House Annexe, New Delhi. The observations/recommendations of the Committee are embodied in its Reports which are presented to Lok Sabha. After a Report has been presented to the House the Ministry or Department concerned is required to take action on the recommendations and conclusions contained in the Report within a period of six months. The replies of the Government are examined by the Committee and an Action Taken Report is presented to the House. The replies to the recommendations contained in the Action Taken Reports are laid on the Table of Lok Sabha in the form of Statements. While U. S. Aââ¬â¢s parliament is called as UNITED STATES CONGRESS Theà United States Congressà is theà bicameralà legislatureà of theà federal governmentà of theà United States, consisting of theà Senate, its upper house, and theà House of Representatives, its lower house. Congress meets in theà Capitolà inà Washington, D. C.Both representatives and senators are chosen throughà direct election. There are 535 voting Members of Congress; the House of Representatives has a membership of 435 and the Senate has a membership 100. Members of the House of Representatives serve two-year terms representing the people of a district. Congressional districts areà apportionedà to states byà populationà using the United States Census results, each state in the union having at least one representative in the Congress.Regardless of population, each of the 50 states has two senators; the 100 senators each serve a six-year term. The terms are staggered so every two years approximately one-third of the Senate is up for election. Most incumbents seek re-election, and their historical likelihood of winning subsequent elections exceeds 90 percent. Theà Parliament of the United Kingdom o f Great Britainà is the supremeà legislative body in the United kingdom, Britishà Crown dependenciesà andà British overseas territories.Theà parliamentà isà bicameral, with anà upper house, theà House of Lords, and aà lower house, theà House of Commons. ]The Queen is the third component of the legislature. The House of Lords includes two different types of members: theà Lords Spiritualà (the seniorà bishopsà of theà Church of England) and theà Lords Temporalà (members of theà Peerage) whose members are not elected by the population at large, but are appointed by the Sovereign on advice of the Prime Minister . Theà Parliament of Great Britainà was formed in 1707. Read also: My Ambition Is To Become a Collector

For centuries, a plump figure was considered attractive in both men and women.à Full figures suggested a life of ease and luxury.à Still today, children are taught that an older man in a red suit with a rounded midsection is jolly and approachable.à Some may even feel that a little fat around the belly is not such a bad thing.à Sadly, far too many people have more than a little.à Obesity has become a worldwide epidemic that affects individuals psychologically, socially, economically, and physically. à à à à à à à à à à à Obesity can strongly affect an individual psychologically and socially.à Just as prejudices against race, sex, and religion are common all across the world, so is prejudice against obese people.à The AORN Journal states that obese individuals ââ¬Å"often are considered lazy overeaters without will power or motivation [â⬠¦] are slothful, have poor personal eating and exercise habits, are of limited intelligence, and lack self-control (Shortt).à Such prejudices have even been seen in physicians who are obesity specialists.à According to a study found in Psychology Today, some physicians ââ¬Å"associated fat people with laziness and stupidity and connected them to words like ââ¬Ëbadââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëworthlessââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Allen).à The fact that healthcare professionals have such strong biases reinforces how widespread ââ¬Å"the stigma of obesity is in our societyâ⬠(Allen). à à à à à à à à à à à Unfortunately, prejudice and discrimination carries on into everyday life for the obese individual.à Economic hardship may ensue.à Employment opportunities may be affected.à ââ¬Å"Employers often presume that people who are obese are lazy and have poor work habits: (Allen).à This misconception results in job opportunities being denied or limited to the obese.à Employers also ââ¬Å"want their companies to be perceived as ââ¬Ëyoung, dynamic, and energeticââ¬â¢ so they avoid putting people who are obese in visible positions, erroneously believing that the obese person will not be quick or alter to the publicââ¬â¢s needsâ⬠(Allen). Although employment opportunities may decrease, expenses related to obesity are on the rise.à Clothes and shoes cost more because the items may have to be especially made and ordered.à Medical bills for associated health problems begin to pile up.à Finding a seat to fit in becomes an added difficulty.à For example, many airlines are now requiring obese individuals to purchase two seats to accommodate their wider size.à Added expenses pose a serious dilemma, since income rates are lower and poverty rates are higher in families with obese members (Raman). à à à à à à à à à à à Emotional suffering, however, may be one of the most painful effects of obesity.à Society subtly teaches that attraction equals thin.à The pressure from peers does not help either.à Obese individuals, especially children and adolescents, are often subjected to endless teasing and ridicule.à It is of little wonder that not so thin men and women think of themselves as fat and unattractive.à These individuals may start to believe the prejudices about them are true.à Such feelings of low self worth lead to depression in many individuals. Thus, depression is often linked to obesity.à Concerning children, and article in Psychology Today states, ââ¬Å"The longer a child is over weight, the more he or she is at risk for depression and other mental disordersâ⬠(Lawson).à Without intervention, these problems can carry on into adulthood.à Obese children and adults are at risk for serious emotional problems.à The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy states, ââ¬Å"Problems include disparagement of body image, a condition in which persons feel that their body is grotesque and loathsome. à They believe that others view them with hostility and contempt, which makes them self-conscious and impairs social functioningâ⬠(Beers 60).à Sadly, these emotional problems may affect personal achievements and relationships.à According to the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, then umber of years of education and marriage rates were lower among women who were obese in childhood and adolescence (Raman). à à à à à à à à à à à While the psychological, social, and emotional effects of obesity are significant, the physical effects of obesity are far more profound.à In fact, the physical effects of obesity are life-threatening.à According to the AORN Journal, ââ¬Å"a person who is 40% overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely as a person of average weightâ⬠(Shortt).à The article continues by stating, ââ¬Å"In 2000, obesity due to poor diet and inactivity cause 16% of all deaths (ie, 400,000), making it the number-two killer after tobacco use (ie, 435,000 deaths)â⬠(Shortt). à à à à à à à à à à à Obese individuals are at an increased risk for many chronic medical conditions.à The AORN Journal lists type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and some forms of cancer as conditions related to obesity (Shortt).à Concerning the increased risk of cancer, Brunner and Suddarthââ¬â¢s Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing states, ââ¬Å"Obesity is associated with endometrial cancer and possibly postmenopausal breast cancers.à Obesity may also increase the risk for cancers of the colon, kidney, and gall bladderâ⬠(Smeltzer 321). The text also correlates obesity and back injuries due to increased stress in the ââ¬Å"relatively weak back musclesâ⬠(2051).à Several other physical effects of obesity are noted in the Merck Manual of diagnosis and Therapy including orthopedic disturbances of weight-bearing and non-weight bearing joints.à The text also states, ââ¬Å"Skin disorders are particularly common; increased sweat and skin secretions, trapped in thick folds of skin, produce a culture medium conducive to fungal and bacterial growth and infectionsâ⬠(Beers 60). à à à à à à à à à à à Everyday tasks become a burden to the obese.à Climbing a set of stairs, walking to the mailbox, tying shoelaces, and playing with their own children are all considered strenuous activities.à The onset of shortness of breath, increased heart rate and blood pressure, seating, and fatigue quickly bring any type of physical activity to an end.à The increased stress to the heart due to obesity can eventually lead to chronic heart failure and even death. à à à à à à à à à à à The expression ââ¬Å"bigger is betterâ⬠is true for many things.à Weight is not one of them.à As waistbands continue to expand, human lives are being endangered.à Obesity is a worldwide crisis that brings long-term psychological, social, emotional, and physical effects.à A closer look at obesity proves that bigger is not always better. Assess the Significance of the Role of Individuals in Reducing Racial
However, it cannot be disputed that, whatever his intentions had been, Lincolnââ¬â¢s Emancipation Proclamation did provide just a glimpse of hope for African Americans; De Jure, the African Americans throughout America had freedom and were able to leave the slavery of Southern plantation owners. Why is it then, that De Facto, the years following the Civil War failed to provide this ââ¬Ënew hopeââ¬â¢ for Blacks and that racism discrimination continued for many years to come? The idea of Blacks developing the mind set they needed in order to fight for their freedom can be categorised as their ââ¬Ëdeveloping consciousnessââ¬â¢. Throughout the 19th and 20th century, it was evident that Blacks had begun to realise that they too had rights and were entitled to the same as the Whites. Through the work of organisations such as the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People) and the Harlem Renaissance as well as individuals such as William Edward Burghardt (W. E. B) Du Bois; Blacks in American began developing their identity as a group and using this to fight back against the oppression of Whites. Du Bois was known as a vocal critic of Booker T Washington, being an educated Black- graduating from Fisk University in 1885 and studying history at Harvard University- he became the first African-American to receive a Ph. D. From Harvard. In order to develop Black Consciousness, Du Bois joined forces with the like minded activists of the NAACP. The NAACPââ¬â¢s main focal points were: The abolition of segregation; equal voting rights; educational opportunities for black people; the enforcement of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. Despite the main focuses of the NAACPs campaigns, it could be argued that the main thing they did for the progress of Black Equality was the uniting of Blacks under one force; by 1918 there were around 43,994 members in the NAACP. This gathering of Blacks under one organisation cannot be ignored, for the first time the African-Americans of America were joining together in order to fight for their freedom. One key event which argues against the idea that individuals were significant in reducing racial discrimination is that of WWI; argued by Sanderââ¬â¢s- ââ¬Å"The First World War generated jobs and gave blacks soldiers a glimpse of greater equalityâ⬠. The treatment of Blacks abroad- particularly France- showed the African-Americans that the treatment they were receiving at home was unfair and that they were indeed in a situation which needed to change. It is a hard task indeed to decide whether or Black Consciousness increased due to the work solely of individuals such as Du Bois, organisations like the NAACP or events like WWI. Many would argue that it was not a single one of these factors which led to the increase of Blackââ¬â¢s realisation of potential. One argument however is that surely without individuals behind the organisations, the work and impact of the organisation is nothing? Individuals are able to lead, organise and even inspire; something that events and organisations are unable to do. The process of increased black nationalism is certainly one which cannot be overlooked; indeed it may not have achieved solid changes in law, and some go as far to say that it may have even hindered the advancement of Black Civil Rights. Despite this one could argue that the development of black nationalism catalysed the civil rights movement for many African Americans; installing a sense of pride inside the hearts of many which was drastically needed at the time. Before trying to pin any credible progress on the black nationalism movement it is first important to attempt to define ââ¬ËBlack Nationalismââ¬â¢. A simple definition of it would be that it was an ideology which stresses the desire for separatism of the black race; ââ¬Å"unity as a people, pride in African heritage, the creation of autonomous institutions and the search for a territory to build a nationâ⬠(Cone, 1991, 122). However the ideology of black nationalists varies greatly between individuals; a perfect example of this is Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. The two vary drastically between their methods in raising black nationalism. The methods and effectiveness of Malcolm Xââ¬â¢s campaign for the improved lives of black Americans are up for questioning by many. Indeed his tactics were more radicalised than his non-violent counterpart Dr King: Malcolm X even stated in Washington, 1964 that ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m here to remind the white man of the alternative to Dr Kingâ⬠. This statement could be seen to sum up the purpose of Malcolm X; due to the lack of credible change attached to him, one has to question whether his purpose was merely just to show what could happen (increased radicalisation and violence) if the demands of Dr King were not met. This lack of credible, positive actions and change by Malcolm X and his current organisation the Nation Of Islam is an idea which can be- and has been- argued in depth. One could argue that, in terms of De Jure, Malcolm X did not achieve anything significant and indeed many considered him to be irresponsible and negative; Thurgood Marshall even went as far as to say that the NOI was ââ¬Å"run by a bunch of thugsâ⬠. Despite this, De Facto, one cannot simply ignore the fact that Malcolm X did indeed draw early attention to the awful conditions in the ghettos and according to the FBI, he was ââ¬Å"The most successful recruiter for the Black Muslimsâ⬠. This can be credited to Malcolm X being a Zeitgeist; he was able to tap into the spirit of the time and the feelings of the people, using this to draw the huge amounts of support he did for the Nation of Islam. Indeed it may be seen that a radical, passionate individual like Malcolm X was needed at that specific time for the black nationalism movement; it cannot be ignored that Martin Luther King was not at his most successful stage and the fire of black civil rights and nationalism which had been burning brightly was indeed beginning to burn dimmer or some might even say had gone out at the time. After looking at the impact in which individuals had on the civil rights movement and the contrast of events, one can still come back to the fundamentals of the debate; without an individual to start an organisation or instigate an event surely no progress at all would have been made?
